Grand Challenges - Get Involved!
There are so many exciting opportunities to get involved, to explore, to find something that excites you so much that you lay awake in bed at night thinking about solutions. There are tremendous opportunities to meet new people, and work toward a common goal for the good of the world. I believe you have special skills and interests that you can develop to become an innovator and leader in a field of study that you are passionate about. As you work through each of the challenges below, there are three levels, each requiring more effort and focus, and more involvement. The first level is to become acquainted with an idea, topic, or field of study. I'll share some videos with you about that particular challenge that hopefully will get you thinking. Then you have to ask yourself, "Does this excite me? Would I like to spend more time? Would I like to be involved in this?" If you answer, "Yes!" then proceed to level 2 where I'll lead you to even more resources on that particular challenge. If, after devoting more time to learning about the challenge, you find that you're still excited and interested, then proceed to level 3, where I'll connect you with communities and resources that you can jump into, and get involved with.
When you watched the video about Eric Whitacre on the home page, you learned that he was interested in music, but not in choir. But he was willing to try something new, and choir became his passion in life. You'll never know if something will spark your passion until you get in and "get your hands dirty" - in other words, jump in, get involved, give it a try. Keep an open mind. In my own life, I tried several professions before I finally found what I love doing.
It's OK to try. And it's OK to fail at something, as long as you learn from the experience and move forward. And it's OK to back out and move in new directions. You'll find if you're going the right direction, you'll feel energized, enthused, and excited to begin each new day. So, go ahead, get started!
